Windows 10 Support Is Ending: What does this mean for your business?

If your organisation is still running on Windows 10, it’s time to start planning ahead as from 14th October 2025, Microsoft will officially end technical support and security updates for Windows 10. For many small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) across the South West, this deadline may still feel far away, but in reality, it’s only a matter of weeks away so acting now is crucial!

What does “end of support” really mean?

When Microsoft ends support for one of its operating systems, this means they are going to stop providing:

·       Security updates – leaving your devices vulnerable to cyber threats.

·       Bug fixes – any technical issues will not be resolved.

·       Technical support – Microsoft will no longer offer help or guidance.

This means that while your devices may still function on Windows 10, they will now become a security risk to your business, particularly when handling sensitive or financial data.

Why this matters for SMEs in the South West

Many SMEs in the South West will rely heavily on Windows devices to complete their day-to-day operations. Outdated systems could create serious challenges, including:

·       Increased cyber risk – without updates, your systems are an easier target for cybercriminals, who actively look for businesses using unsupported software.

·       Compliance issues – running on outdated systems may affect your ability to meet data protection and industry compliance requirements.

·       Operational disruptions – security breaches or compatibility problems with newer software can lead to costly downtime.

What should your business do now?

·       Take some time to audit your systems. Identify how many devices in your organisation are still using Windows 10.

·       Plan your upgrade to Windows 11 or an alternative supported operating system as soon as possible.

·       October 14th is just around the corner – make sure there’s enough room in your budget for replacing or upgrading devices. This takes time and resources so spreading costs now will make the transition smoother in the long run.
