Still of Joseph Ross speaking

Back in June, our Chief Technology and Finance Officer, Joseph Ross attended CyberSync at Infosec 2025. This event is run by CISO Crowd in partnership with MYREDFORT, an online cyber security community bringing together those interested in business technology, the problems it solves and those who provide it. The CyberSync event is an exclusive gathering that provides a relaxed atmosphere for networking opportunities away from the busy tradeshow. Seasoned cyber professionals and industry leaders come together to showcase their wealth of experience, offering guidance and top tips on how you can protect your business from the threats of cybercrime. Joseph went along to the event to represent the SWCRC and to deliver an informative speaker session on “Shadow AI: Between Innovation and Risk”. Shadow AI occurs when artificial intelligence is used within an organisation informally and without permission. While this may spark increased productivity and innovation, it also comes with its own security risks, posing concern for many organisations.

Joseph examined Shadow AI as a complex sociotechnical issue, drawing on case studies from multiple sectors such as healthcare, defence, finance, and education, and revealing how these unregulated tools can expose your organisation to cyber threats and leave you vulnerable to data breaches and regulatory non-compliance. However, Shadow AI is more than just a threat to your business. It can also be a sign of unmet needs that must be addressed. In this speaker session, Joseph highlights the importance of governance, transparency and accountability in the use of AI and how without proper guidance, Shadow AI can lead to catastrophic consequences. Joseph also provides advice on how to use AI responsibly and offers an early insight into his Academic paper on the subject which is due for imminent release. You can watch Joseph’s informative session here.

In addition, Joseph also featured on a few videos put together by The Amigos Network who hosted a few VIP networking and hospitality packages for senior cyber professionals at CyberSync. First, Joseph sat down alongside Chris Kirschke, Field CISO at Tuskira, to discuss AI in Security. Is it a real game changer for cyber security or just a short-term solution? What are the real, measurable use cases in detection, SOC automation, or attacker behaviour modelling? You can watch this video here.

Next, Joseph and Bryan Woolgar-O’Neil, CTO and Co-Founder of the Harmonic Society, investigated the insider threats in the age of AI. The cyber risks associated with the use of AI are more complex than ever. Watch here as Joseph and Bryan explore how cyber security leaders are changing their policies, updating their tools, and fostering a company culture that allows them to stay ahead of the game.

Finally, Joseph and Goer Mohammed, Group Head of Infosec for L & Q Group sat down to discuss the importance of compliance. Is it a critical part of a good cyber security strategy? And where do compliance and cyber security meet? You can watch this video here.

We are always delighted to be involved in events such as CyberSync at Infosec as we believe its important to promote the South West region’s proactive approach to educating local businesses on the threats of cybercrime and promoting collaborative cyber security efforts across the board. We also enjoy the networking opportunities this event brings and the chance to strengthen connections with key industry professionals who come together to ensure the most up to date cyber security best practices are being shared with businesses and communities across the South West and beyond.

We believe our presence at this event also highlights our commitment to raising cyber awareness and contributing to the national conversation on cyber resilience in such an ever-changing digital landscape.
