Alex Bunn - young talent in cyber security

The South West Cyber Resilience Centre knows that building a cyber resilient business is about more than just technology, it’s about people. That’s why we’re proud to support organisations like Lineal, one of our community ambassadors, who are committed to providing practical cyber security guidance to businesses across the UK.

Recently, Lineal, celebrated a remarkable achievement. Their Degree Apprentice, Alex Bunn, became one of the youngest individuals in the UK to pass the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) Assured Cyber Advisor exam. This prestigious certification recognises individuals capable of providing trusted, practical cyber security advice to organisations of all sizes.

Alex’s achievement is more than just a personal milestone. As he explains:

“I'm delighted to be recognised as an NCSC Cyber Advisor. This reflects my commitment to providing practical cyber security guidance to organisations, and I look forward to helping businesses confidently implement security measures that mitigate risks in a cost-effective, achievable manner.”

For SMOs, this kind of expertise is vital. Cyber threats are becoming increasingly sophisticated, yet many small businesses still struggle with implementing cyber security measures in ways that are realistic and affordable. Having certified advisors like Alex means businesses have access to trusted guidance tailored to their own needs, focussing on simple steps that they can take every day to improve their cyber security position.

This milestone also positions Lineal among a select group of IT Service Providers in the UK with multiple officially recognised Cyber Advisors on their team. For SMOs, that translates into confidence that these organisations can give them the advice that they need, whether it involved achieving Cyber Essentials or understanding the most powerful security controls, businesses know they can rely of these experts who understand the real-world challenges that they face every day.

Alex’s journey is also an inspiring example of how young professionals can contribute

meaningfully to cyber resilience. Just months ago, Alex shared his experiences on a panel at The Royal Society, London, alongside some of the UK’s most distinguished figures in science and technology. His story demonstrates that dedication, curiosity, and hands-on learning can accelerate careers while also contributing to the wider business community’s cyber resilience.

The SWCRC sees the benefits of initiatives like this every day. By supporting local businesses, apprentices, and IT service providers who prioritise accessible security, we help SMOs in the South West reduce risks, protect customer data, and build resilient digital operations.

We would like to congratulate Alex Bunn on this outstanding achievement and thank Lineal for their ongoing partnership as a community ambassador. For SMOs in the South West looking for cyber guidance, their example highlights how investing in expertise and talent can pay off, not only in security, but in long-term success for your business.
